haha "EvAR!" ;)

It was pretty easy though. I was mostly handy for the tight spaces that needed smaller fingers. Also I helped drop the screw! 5

Well, theoretically not very often. I told my mechanic on that Friday that I thought I needed a generator. He put a voltmeter on it and told my my charging system was fine—it was reading between 12.5 and 14.5 volts. So then on the way to APE, I started having these problems—this was Saturday. But I was able to get the existing brushes adjusted well enough to get the voltage up where it needed to be.

But then on Sunday it was clear that the generator was just wearing the brushes down to little stubs. This meant that the commutator had worn out and was no longer smooth. No way around it—I needed a whole new generator.

So with the help of Mel and Roz, I put used (but good) brushes in my generator so that I could at least make it home. Actually, by the time I got home, Those brushes were wearing out too!

Monday, I had my mechanic put in a new Bosch generator. The bug runs fine now, except that I'm still trying to track down why the car always has a slight smell of gasoline.

I love the format.
The most common source of gasoline smell I have seen in bugs is a cracked charcoal canister (or its lines) in the front passenger side under the "hood" (where the engine is not). 5

Well this one has this horizontal, white (-ish) plastic box which I think is supposed to alleviate pressure changes in the gas tank, so that's also a potential culprit. Unfortunately, that is a discontinuted item (unless, hey, hmm, might it still be available in Mexico?) so I might have to build one or repair the one I've got. Meanwhile, yes, changing the lines is the next step...

Look for cracks. If it is damaged, I can get you one. I think 96 was the last year they made them here, so they are everywhere here - like a plague of locust. There are also MANY places here that have nothing but parts for them. I will be crossing the border in mid Dec., and could mail you one from the US then. Just make sure it is damaged first.

That would actually be kind of cool... a Biblical plague of VW Bugs. Imagine that.
