November 25, 2008 - 19:12:30 How many times have you taken out dashboards? James Conrad
November 26, 2008 - 12:08:57 I took out the instrument cluster in my '67 Chrysler Newport looking for an electrical short, which I eventually found—someone had put a jumper across the ammeter. That was in December of 1993. It was 20 below, so I would go outside and work for 10 minutes, then back inside to warm up for 20. It tok forever.
I took out the instrument cluster in the Nissan in 1998 or so, to replace a couple of burned-out bulbs. Not too long after, a couple of other bulbs burned out, and I said "The hell with it, they can stay burned out, I'm never taking out a dashboard again."
Eventually, I got the idea that maybe I would, to replace the cracked crash pad. I talked to a guy at the Nissan dealership, and he said "You don't want to do that. As tough as taking out the instrument cluster is, replacing the crash pad is ten times worse because you have to take out everything."
I took out the instrument cluster on the '86 Volvo 240, to try to fix the odometer. Turned out that I couldn't do it, so I put it all back together and took it to a mechanic.
Finally, this past weekend, I replaced the crash pad in the Nissan. The guy was right; I had to take out everything.
So, 4 times I guess. paperdummy
